Teamworks e Websphere

In una delle prime apparizioni in pubblico, dopo l'acquisizioni da parte di IBM, Phil Gilbert ha parlato dei progetti a breve scadenza in atto.

La presentazione è avvenuta durante il bpmCamp 2010, organizzato a da bp3 a Stanford per i clienti Lombardi pochi giorni fa.

Business-IT consulting gap

Si parla molto di BPM come un approccio per ridurre il gap tra business e IT (attraverso sistemi "What You See Is What You Run" e cicli di sviluppo molto rapidi) ma come ridurre il gap tra i consulenti di Business e quelli IT ?

Su un bellissimo blog russo (ma scritto in inglese e che vi consiglio di tener d'occhio) ho trovato una bella analisi e suggerimenti.

Il BPM sarà la fine degli ERP ?

In un recente articolo Jan Baan ha detto:

'The successor of ERP is BPM....ERP is becoming the model of complexity. It has become too complicated.'

( Jan Baan è oggi CEO of Cordys mentre prima aveva fondato Baan Corporation, uno dei primi produttori di ERP).

Questa affermazione ha aperto discussioni sui blog: qui trovate un po' di commenti

BPM: i 7 fattori di successo secondo Gartner

Secondo Bill Rosser, vice president e analista in Gartner, ci sono 7 fattori non IT per il successo di uno sviluppo applicativo con logica BPM.

Eccoli (li lascio in inglese che rende meglio dell'italiano):

• limit scope
• go for high value
• ensure clear alignment to the business goals
• enforce the right metrics
• agree the goals
• get an enthusiastic business sponsor
• engage business users in the process

Bill sostiene anche:

tutte osservazioni che mi trovano completamente d'accordo.

Aumentano il lettori del blog

In questi due giorni si nota un forte incremento sul numero degli accessi e delle pagine viste.

In particolare registro un + 101% di incremento accessi negli ultimo mese ed +120% delle pagine viste.

Come scegliere il primo progetto BPM

La scelta del primo progetto da sviluppare con tecniche e strumenti BMP è sicuramente un passo importante che può influenzare tutte le evoluzioni future e che può anche affossarne la scelta.

Sul blog BPM Bluework è presentata una bella lista di step.

Sono sostanzialmente d'accordo anche se al punto 1.1 io non scarterei un processo mission critical per avere una alta attenzione da parte del management.

BPM: si espanderà

The multi-billion dollar business process management (BPM) sector could expand beyond traditional boundaries as advanced software aid mobile applications to deliver technology practically anywhere, according to IT industry tracker Gartner.

In a statement released yesterday, Gartner stated that BPM technologies will become more agile providing that much leverage for non-traditional regions to capitalise from. Newer technologies will make BPM suites easier to use and more relevant for the end user, the report said.

Gartner recommended that end users look for new vendors to fill in the holes in their BPMs that will, between this year and 2014, develop into systems that can self-adjust based on user preferences, consumer demand and predictive capabilities.

Grandi manovre nel mercato BPM

E' passato meno di un mese dal mio ultimo post e sul mercato BPM si è abbattuto un uragano.

IBM sta acquistando Lombardi Software e Progress ha fatto lo stesso con Savvion.

Che dire? Beh la prima osservazione è che il mercato BPM è un mercato in espansione e che attira grossi investimenti dai big player e che probabilmente ne vedremo ancora delle belle.

Ci sono già voci insistenti su alcuni dei pure player rimasti indipendenti.

Molto interessante il commento di Phil Gilbert, CEO di Lombardi, che trovate qui.

Gli utenti cambiano lo specifiche!!!!

Una delle osservazioni più frequenti da parte degli sviluppatori è che "gli utenti continuano a cambiare le loro richieste"

Ciò è sicuramente vero ma come si vede da questo schemino ripreso da un blog russo (tutto il mondo paese!)

non sempre è colpa loro !!!

Cerchiamo quindi di dotarci di strumenti che sopportino lo sviluppo "iterativo" invece che quello classico a cascata e li faremo contenti.

Orchestrazione vs coreografia

Una domanda frequente che ci viene posta è sulla differenza tra coreografia e orchestrazione; vediamo di provare a dare due definizioni che possano chiarire il concetto.

Per prima cosa osservo che le due parole sono state scelte in modo accurato e rendono l'idea.

Orchestrazione: (come nel caso di una orchestra) esiste un direttore (sistema centrale) che dice agli orchestrali (servizi o sistemi remoti) cosa fare; la sincronizzazione è gestita centralmente

Coreografia: in questo caso, come nel caso di un corpo di ballo, ogni ballerino (sistema remoto/servizio) sa cosa deve fare e si sincronizza con gli altri ballerini per eseguire i propri passi. Quindi ogni singolo sistema remoto/servizio conosce casa fare e chi chiamare alla fine della propria attività

Previsioni per il 2015

In un recente studio della società WinterGreen che ha analizzato i trend del mercato BPM & SOA si dice:

"Business process management (BPM) and services oriented architecture engine markets at $1.8 billion for licenses, maintenance, and services in 2008 are expected to reach $6.2 billion by 2015"

BPM è la tecnologia più importante degli ultimi 30 anni per migliorare il business

Questa frase un po' impegnativa è stata pronunciata da Toby Redshaw, CIO in AVIVA (uno dei gruppi assicurativi più grandi al mondo) nel corso di una intervista su Financial Times .

Attualmente Aviva ha 23 progetti attivi su BPM.

Ad esempio il processo di gestione di" assunzioni e dismissioni del personale", uno dei primi ad essere realizzato, è stato sviluppato in meno di 12 settimane.

Aviva è utilizzatore di Teamworks di Lombardi.

E' nato da poco un sito che per poter discutere e mettere a fattor comune le esperienze su BPMN 2.0.

Vi ricordo che Temworks7 di Lombardi è uno dei primi BPMS a supportare tutti i costrutti BMPN.

Interessante commento alla nuova release di Blueprint dal blog di Bp3.

Riporto integralmente:

"Lombardi’s October 2009 Blueprint Update was just announcend. Seemingly minor changes, but with interesting implications…

I would list them in reverse of the order Lombardi has listed them in their announcement:

First, increased notification options to keep you abreast of process modeling updates in your domain. Of course, I’d like to see an RSS feed as an option rather than just email-focused options, but combining the email notifications with a good email filter and you can get about the same result.

Second, additional properties to track against the activities of your process. Identifying systems, cycle time, cost, etc. That’s great… but by itself it is just documentation…

Third, leveraging those properties for heat-mapping and analysis of your process. This is actually the whiz-bang feature of the release, and shows how a small incremental improvement on a good foundation can really change the way you look at a tool. Prior to the analysis/heat-map, odds are you might just enter the data because it is “the right thing to do” to document the process for posterity (or for yourself). Now you have a reason to do it that is for the analysis of improvement opportunities. I’ll point out, however, that without reading the release note, it would have been easy to open Blueprint and not even notice the “Analyze” button, and the fact that you can choose which attribute to base your heat map on is easy to miss. But analysis mode works equally well on the process mapping view as well as the BPMN diagramming view.

What’s exciting about this release is that it offers a real reason to capture valuable data about your process… and it also opens the door for feeding information from your executing processes in Teamworks back to Blueprint for analysis (technical challenges remain, but it becomes increasingly obvious that this can be done)

Nuova release di Blueprint

Sabato scorso è stata messa in linea una nuova release di Blueprint. Ecco qui di seguito le novità:

The October ‘09 update is now available on blueprint.lombardi.com! This release has some exciting enhancements that I think will make Blueprint an even more valuable tool for discovering and sharing your processes. We’ve added a new process analysis mode, several new properties to the Blueprint documentation template, email notifications for changes happening to your processes, and a many more improvements based upon your feedback.

Let’s take a look the enhancements in detail:

• Enhanced Process Analysis: We’ve introduced a new analysis mode in today’s release that allows you to instantly highlight the areas of your process that need attention and improvement. When you switch to analysis mode, Blueprint heat maps both the discovery map and process diagram with the data you’ve entered in the details for each activity. This allows you to instantly see which parts of your process have problems, excessive cost or cycle time, or that are risk points. It substantially increases the visibility you have into all of your processes, and is an excellent tool to help you make a business case for improvements.

  You can find the Analyze button in the toolbar whenever you’re viewing a process. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

• New Properties: One of Blueprint’s great strengths is that it’s always offered a template for documenting the important information about your processes — who’s involved, what’s required and created at this step, and the like. We’ve heard from you that there are a few other key pieces of information that you need to catalog at each activity, and today we’ve added the most valuable and frequently requested ones:
  • Systems
  • Cycle Time:
  • Cost
  • Value Added / Non Value Added
  • Risk
  • Supplier and Customer (SIPOC)

  All of these new properties can be heat mapped onto the diagram using the new analysis mode, which can be extremely powerful. Need to highlight areas of your process with unaddressed risk points? How about the areas that will be affected when you decommission one of your legacy applications? What about the non-value added parts that are wasting money? Analysis mode can make answering all of these questions a snap.

• Email Notifications: The Blueprint activity feeds are an extremely valuable tool for tracking and discovering changes that happen to your processes and the processes that you depend on. Since weintroduced them a few months ago, we’ve heard from many customers that they’ve helped increase involvement and visibility across the organization, which has in turn led to many improvements that would have been lost previously. Today we’re introducing the ability for Blueprint to proactively push these changes to your organization via email. You can subscribe to a weekly digest of your activity feed, a daily digest of all the changes to your favorite processes and projects, and instant notifications of replies to the comments and feedback you’ve left.

Dovete gestire vari ERP? Usate il BPM!!!

Un recente report di Forrester Research si è concentrato sul tema dei sistemi ERP maturi, per non dire obsoleti, che molti CIO si ritrovano come eredità di gestioni precedenti.

"La 'madre di tutti i problemi', scrive Forrester, è che il business evolve più velocemente del software ERP, sia in termini tecnologici che di best practice supportate.

Pochi giorni fa la società di analisi inglese Butler Group ha pubblicato un report su Teamworks7

Ecco le conclusioni:

The new Where Used view can show you everywhere a person or system is involved in processes, where your inputs and outputs are used, or even where you see the same risks, problems, and opportunities for improvement.

• Better Usability And Experience: The Blueprint design team has been listening to your feedback and doing research on ways to make using the product even easier and more productive. To that end, we've redesigned the home page to make it far more personal-Activity Feeds and Favorites put information that's relevant to you at your fingertips. We've studied your navigation patterns and made it easier to get to the view of the process you need with fewer clicks. We've made the Discovery Map better than ever by adding panning, zooming, and printing to PDF just like the Process Diagram. Finally, we developed the participant / read-only view for processes from the ground up to make sure the highest value information is viewable on the screen at all times.

It’s hard to describe how excited we are about the launch of Teamworks 7 at Lombardi. The excitement isn’t just about the big-picture value it will bring - it is about the advancements we have made in this release will make a difference to the people that are building processes in Teamworks day after day. Let me give you a few examples.

We’ve made it easier for authors that are just beginning to use Teamworks. How many times have you installed a new software product that gave you overwhelming numbers of buttons and menu options while providing no insight in how to use it?

The Authoring Environment in Teamworks 7 is redesigned to remove a lot of the noise and early confusion without losing the features that power authors need. You can see this from the completely new skin, simplified menus, and the way that Teamworks automatically organizes your process assets.

In addition, all authors now build their process assets within the context of one process app (project) at a time, which ensures that no one is changing assets that aren’t related to their projects.

There are a considerable number of changes we made to simplify some of the common authoring tasks while matching current best practices within the Teamworks community. For example, we simplified the way that integrations to external systems work by removing the need to create separate integration definition and connector components.

We have also introduced Teamworks Service types, including Human Services, Integration Services, Rule Services, and several others. This helps authors from making modeling mistakes like placing a service intended for human interaction into a system swimlane. We have also enhanced the data mapping capabilities to allow you to change activity implementations without having to redo your input/output data mappings.

We also added a lot of great new features that help new and experienced users alike. Many of these features like back-in-time, toolkits, and automated deployment are highlighted on our website, so please take a look there to see some examples of how these work. Our focus in adding these new features was to make sure that we added them in a way that makes sense for BPM and a model-driven architecture. We didn’t just bolt-on a version control system and tools designed to manage text-based code; we completely rethought how to manage changes to your process model as your processes evolve in a way that preserves the ability to build and iterate quickly.

Many of the features in Teamworks 7 were designed and built by people that have been on implementation teams for BPM projects and understand the challenges that many of you face each day. We think this release marks a major step forward BPM and for the experience of those that build processes every day. Let us know what you think.
