Nuova versione di Blueprint

Il 20 dicembre è stata rilasciata una nuova versione di Blueprint.
La novità più grande è la possibilità di memorizzare e condividere, assieme al modello del processo, anche file di qualsiasi tipo. Quindi ora è possibile fare upload/download di qualsiaisi file sia utile per la documentazione del processo.

Un'altra tesi sul BPM

Di ritorno dopo la pausa natalizia, all'inizio di un nuovo anno che si preannuncia difficile, è con grande piacere che vi segnalo che presso Univeristà degli studi di Bari, Facoltà di Scienze Matematiche, Corso di laurea in Informatica è stata discussa una tesi sul BPM.

La tesi presentata da Michele Filannino ha come titolo "ORCHESTRAZIONE DI RISORSE UMANE NEL BPM"

La tesi è stata svolta con la collaborazione di una azienda italiana produttrice di una piattaforma di BPM. Anche se nostra concorrente mi fa piacere segnalarla: Openwork di bari.

Congratulazioni al nuovo dottore e auguri per una bella carriera improntata al BPM e speriamo che molti altri seguano questa strada.

10 cause di fallimento di progetti SOA

Dal confronto di alcuni esperti emergono le ragioni dei molti stop a progetti Soa già avviati, ma anche i consigli perché si possa raggiungere l’obiettivo prefissato.

Ecco un decalogo, pubblicato su eWeek-europe, delle cause che portano al blocco di progetti legati alle archietture orientate ai servizi. Vediamoli brevemente (per l'articolo completo cliccate qui)
Molto interessante il primo "comandamento"

1) Non si riesce a far comprendere il valore delle Soa alle varie figure professionali
I progetti consacrano grandi quantità di tempo, risorse umane e denaro per mettere a punto la miglior architettura possibile. Buona cosa, ma questo si fa spesso a danno di un corretto confronto con le figure professionali presenti in azienda. Così, quando l’architettura è pronta, nessuno se ne serve, perché nessuno ne comprende l’interesse. Occorre, dunque, avviare un progetto mettendo in cima a tutto il bisogno di rispondere a problematiche che vengono dai soggetti che appartengono all’azienda. Meglio se si usa il grimaldello della “killer app”, cioè dell’applicazione in grado di risolvere ogni problema. Il Bpm (Business process management) è certamente la “killer app” per le Soa.

2) Viene sottostimato l’impatto dei cambiamenti organizzativi
3) Non si ottiene il corretto sostegno dal management.
4) Si prova a implementare una Soa con pochi investimenti
5) Si manca delle competenze necessarie
6) Si gestiscono male i progetti
7) Si vede la Soa come un progetto e non come un’architettura
8) Si sottovaluta la complessità della Soa
9) Non si applica una governance Soa
10) Si consente che i vendor guidino l’architettura

Potete aspettare 18 mesi?

La maggior parte delle nuove applicazioni o gli aggiornamenti corposi hanno tempi di rilascio di 18 mesi almeno.

Con la situazionen di mercato attuale nessun azienda può accettare tempi così lunghi.

La soluzione è utilizzare strumenti BPM.

Sentite qui come due CIO (di SIRVA e NAACO) sono riusciti a ridurre drasticamente i tempi di sviluppo attraverso l'adozione di tecnologie BPM.

Lombardi incontra gli analisti

Phil Gilbert e Rod Favaron, rispettivamente presidente/CTO e Chairman/CEO di Lombardi, qualche giorno fa, hanno incontrato gli analisti di settore per fare il punto sulle attività e per dare informazioni sul futuro.

Tra gli altri era presente Sandy Kemsley che ne ha scritto un commento sul suo blog.

Eccone uno stralcio interessante:
"Lombardi continues to grow — 60% in license revenue and 40% overall — although their services business isn’t growing as fast as license sales since they are bringing on more partners to provide services rather than doing it all themselves, especially in geographies that they can’t cover well. They’ve increased their headcount by 25% and increased productivity (which allows them to grow revenues faster than headcount), and are in a profitable state for 2008. They believe that BPM will be counter-cyclical to the current economic crisis, and have the potential to grow in more difficult financial times due to a closer focus on ROI..."

Sulla rivista SAP articolo sul BPM

Il numero di novembre dicembre della rivista degli utenti SAP Spectrum dedica l'articolo di copertina al BPM. Qui il link.

Buon segno. Anche se il loro prodotto sarà disponibile solo nel 2009, e ovviamente sarà la prima release, stanno affrontando il problema.

Il dilemma: con chi parlare di BPM? IT o User

Riprendo integralmente un post di Fahad Osmani, Manager del gruppo BPM Consulting in Lombardi, che contiene delle interessanti osservazioni sulla strategia da adottare quando si parla di BPM in azienda.

"" Like all enterprise software solutions, the person implementing a BPM strategy must contend with a chasm between the business and IT. The two speak different languages, have different priorities and tend to justify results in a different light.

So which side do you approach first?

There’s a tendency for enterprise software to gravitate to IT. And why not? IT gets it, right? They understand the technology and the inherent benefits it brings to the table. And IT is constantly justifying new software, hardware and services through the annual budget reviews. So it seems natural for anyone wishing to see a BPM solution deployed to look at IT first.

I believe this is a mistake.

Despite conventional thinking, the right place to begin conveying the benefits of a BPM deployment is on the business side of the house. That’s because BPM has to be looked at not for the technology, features and specs, but for its ability to change and improve the business.

If you’re implementing a BPM strategy, you have to lead with the person who can ask questions like, “What are all the touch points. How does this affect our business? What is the value we are getting out of this? How do you actually measure the benefits that we are going to get out of this?” These questions and answers are best addressed by the business.

On many occasions, when I have engaged with IT department, I struggled with knowing the business benefits of the BPM deployment. Typically, IT is reacting to a request from the business. And being the IT department within a company they don’t always care what the business benefits are. They have a mandate to fulfill those requests to the best of their ability. So I feel like we can work better with our customers when we engage directly with the business.
Conversely, the business side sometimes has an unnatural understanding of what IT does. Most technical strategies are not for the business to drive and, in fact, by bringing the business to the table as part of these strategies, you bring into effect an unnatural alliance where natural departmental goals are subverted.

I think that part of that is good because they are both trying to talk the same language. And it’s not that IT isn’t talking the business language, it’s that the business is trying to talk the IT language. This can lead to increased communication between the two houses, but under a vision of making each other’s jobs easier, which isn’t really the point. The point is to realize business value and add to the bottom line of the organization.

I still think the business side is the best location to gain advocacy and support. But when you engage with the business, strive for the enterprise level over the department level.

That’s where you’re going to find the people with the broader business goals and ultimately the people who are going to provide approvals and sign the checks. But if that’s not possible, strive for a connection at the higher end departmental level. Get a foothold there and try to showcase some value.
Once the initial process success is achieved, BPM finds the largest welcome mat on multiple departmental doors. The results of a well-executed BPM campaign are far more compelling than a canned demo. And while it’s good to start on the business side when beginning a BPM project, you have to ultimately have both sides working together for success. BPM should unite the two groups. Not just serve as a communications conduit between the two.""

Mi piacerebbe aprire una discussione sull'argomento che reputo fondamentale per chi, come noi, cerca con fatica di portare i concetti BPM tra i propri clienti.

Nuovo aggiornamento di Blueprint

Blueprint, il prodotto di BPM discovery collaborativo usato da più di 4000 aziende in più 100 nazioni, è stato nuovamente aggiornato.
Le principali modifiche riguardono:

• User management: per una migliore e semplificat gestione delgli utenti
• Invitation: migliorato il meccanismo per invitare colleghi ad utilizzare Blueprint per il discovery di un processo.
• Printing: miglioramenti sostanziali permettono ora di stampare perfettamente anche grafici di processi molto estesi.
• Upgrade istantaneo: semplificato il meccanismo per crescere il numero degli utenti e per passaggio dalla versone gratuita e limitatta a quella a pagamento e completa.
• Word export dor process documentation: possibile ora esportare la documentazione dei processi in formato word (oltra a quella già presente di creare il powerpoint del processo)

Nel Gartner/Symposium che si è tenuto Orlando (FL) sono stati identificati 4 trend che influenzeranno l'IT nei prossimi anni.

No. 3: Revolutionary Changes in Software and How it is Consumed — By 2010, SOA will be used in part in more than 80 percent of new, mission-critical applications and business processes. The resulting future application environment will be more granular, inclusive and fluid to enable rapid composition, integration, orchestration and reuse. During 2008 and 2009, organizations must radically re-engineer their processes, governance and disciplines to initiate and manage this transition as well as evaluate and manage external and off-premises delivery of applications

E' ora di fare l'inventario dei processi

Scrive Jim Sinur sul suo blog in Gartner:

"I was listening to the opening session at the Gartner Symposium, here in Florida, and there was a big theme around how to deal with the economic uncertainties we are seeing at the moment. One of the speakers said that it was time to delete applications as these are times to trim down and look for belt tightening opportunities It occurred to me that there are probably as many or more processes in an organization as there are applications once you drill down to a detail level.

Business process improvement efforts are often aimed at optimizing for cost savings within a process and/or innovative new processes, but there my gut tells me there are costs savings to be gleaned by getting rid of processes and/or standardizing on common processes. It also seems to me that some of the same application portfolio best practices could be applied to process in order to save money going forward. It’s pretty easy to do a high level process value evaluation and follow the scent of non value added sub processes and look for processes to trim. This seems like an obvious place to start our cost savings journey needed going forward into 2009."

Search CIO.com, una rivista di IT managementche si rivolge ai CIO, ha pubblicato un bell'articolo dal titolo: 

The politics of BPM: sit IT, business at the table

Nell'articolo sono citate le esperienze di due utilizzatori di Lombardi-Teamworks: NACCO Group e Wells Fargo.

Particolarmente interessante quanto affermato da Bob Shallow sulla scelta di sviluppare in Teamworks un sistema PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) invece che acquistare una piattaforma dedicata. In particolare si dice:

"The decision has paid off: Shallow has completed many projects successfully and quickly. The first one -- a process redesign to automate a small cost authorization system -- took just 15 days" e

"SOA isn't a factor right now. "It's too far in the future to predict. We have tons of processes that we can improve leveraging our existing systems and the BPM tool"

Disponibile un nuovo aggiornamento di Blueprint

L'applicazione Lombardi SaaS per il BPM discovery è stata nuovamente aggiornata.

La nuova versione è stata migliorata nelle performance mentre è stata riscritta la parte relativa alla documentazione dei processi permettendone ora una vista più strutturata. 

Vi ricordo che la prova di Blueprint è gratuita e in questa nuova versione la procedura di primo login è stata semplificata al massimo.

Ora in 20-30 secondi si è in condizione di utilizzare il sistema.
